Free listings vs Shopping ads: one feed, two jobs

The same Merchant Center feed powers free listings and paid Shopping. How each one uses your data, and where fixes pay off twice.

[Publish date]

One Merchant Center feed powers both free product listings and paid Shopping ads. They read the same data, but they use it in different ways.

Free listings

Free listings are organic product results across Google, including the Shopping tab, Search, Images and Lens. There is no bid, so relevance and data quality decide how often you show up.

Shopping ads and Performance Max

Paid campaigns still match searches to your feed rather than to keywords. Your bids and budget decide how often you compete; your data decides which searches you can enter and how relevant you look when you do.

Where they meet

  • A disapproval removes the product from both.
  • Better titles, categories and attributes help both.
  • custom_label_0 to custom_label_4 only matter for structuring paid campaigns.
  • product_type helps you segment campaigns and read reports.

Fix the feed once and both channels benefit, which is why feed quality is usually the cheapest growth lever in Shopping.
